Desktop Publishing (DTP) services in translation: Why are they important?

DesktopPublishing or DTP is the process of creating documents using page layout and graphics on computer in multiple languages. It is part of translation process and is done usually before or after translation.

It is quite difficult to keep original layout or designs of original document consistent when translating the document. Graphs, photo captions or even forms maybe incorrectly positioned or even truncated. For instance, as English has longer sentences and words compared to Korean language, it takes up more space. Thus, it may look quite messy.

This is when DTP or Desktop Publishing service takes in place. Layout and formatting of the translated file need to be re-designed so that it looks identical to the original file.

DTP Process

Clients usually send the file in PDF files or sometimes, InDesign files. Translators at I’MTranslation would translate in either converted Word document or CAT tools (Computer Assisted Translation tools). Translators can only translate the texts and not so much about the layout of the document.

Our project managers at I’M Translation goes through the entire translated file and compare it with the original document that client sent and send it to the DTP specialist. This is when DTP specialist re-design the entire translated document.

DTP specialists fix and redesign the document including the text sizes, colors, segmentation, and truncation, text fonts and bulleting, etc. When DTP specialists send the completed file to our project managers, the project managers does the final checking by comparing two files (both original file and redesigned file) to make sure they are read or seen the same in terms of format.

The benefits of DTP

As I’MTranslation has DTP teams, we ensure greater quality of translation for our clients. Having DTP teams at language service provider just like I’M Translation, it saves up time for clients. As formatting and layout document can be quite time-consuming, DTP services can save up time for the clients who are on tight schedules.

Also, there are risks of errors when clients try to plug in the translated text to match with the original format. It is because it is quite difficult to plug in the target language that they are not familiar with, thus it increases risks of errors. DTP teams at I’M Translation can use all kinds of programs and tools to make sure that these risks are avoided.
