How do translation agencies translate?

When translation agencies get projects, they go through TEP (Translation, Editing, and Proofreading) along with QA process to ensure that the work is completed with high quality level. Without editing and proofreading, the quality of translation can lead to mistranslation and may affect the message you are trying to deliver. The TEP is the main stage of translation process and the roles of translator, editor, proofreader and QA are important.

After a translator completes translation, the editor edits the text and refines the sentence and then proofreaders check grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation and consistency. Then QA will do technical testing.

Editors specifically receive copy of document translated by translator and they compare original with translated document to determine accuracy and check to see if the content match. It is important for editors to make document understandable and concise.

Sometimes, editors go through Post Editing Machine Translation process. This process ensures overall consistency by ensuring that translated texts are free from linguistic errors including mistranslations and lexical inconsistencies. This can only be done by professional editors who have deep understandings of subject matter of the original text and who are bilingual.

Editors also go through desktop publishing (DTP) to ensure that translated text looks identical to the original document by using various Photoshop tools.

Proofreaders on the other hand, focuses on grammar and sentence structures. This is usually done by native speakers of languages to make translated text easily readable by consumers. They make the use of terminologies being used in specific countries and correct unnatural phrases and misspellings while checking the translated text without referencing the original text.

So why is proofreading important in translation? Proofreading is a key element of the translation process as it ensures translated documents are accurate. Without proofreading, it will be difficult to find grammatical errors which can change the meaning of original text.
